There is a federal election looming this year in Australia. The Rudd government (currently in power) has had a recent run of bad press over a home-insulation scheme that went awry and resulted in the demotion of the minister responsible (Peter Garrett), with the opposition leader Tony "should have become a priest" Abbott has been howling at the media that Rudd should "sack" the aforementioned minister. All we have heard on this issue is that "Peter Garrett is responsible for the deaths of 4 insulation installers and should be sacked". Over, and over, it's all Tony Abbott seems to have to say on the issue and it's all the media seem to want to report.
Until today. Finally a journo has actually analysed that facts, and deemed that the rate of house fires from insulation has actually DROPPED after this scheme was introduced, and that the risk assessment that was "ignored" by the governent actually didn't identify any of the risks that have since occurred as being substantial...
Here is one of the more objective pieces of journalism you'll read this year, and I'd encourage anyone thinking of voting Liberal at the next election to read it and have a good think about how stupid Tony Abbott sounds next time he opens his mouth on this issue.
