Peak Oil

Watched a very informative and scary show about the looming end of the world's oil supply last night on 4-Corners.  Peak Oil is when the supply/demand curves cross over and we are using more oil than we can produce.  Some believe we are already there, some think that it will happen in the next 5-10 years.  Regardless the price of oil will certainly only go one way from here, and that is up, and when it runs out we are all in deep, deep shit.  Here's a link to a summary of the story.  Here's a link to a broadband stream of the show.  Time to drag that old bicycle out of the garage, buy some solar panels, stockpile some fuel for that last trip to the grocery store to fight for the few remaining items left on the shelves as the planes, ships and trucks that deliver your food sit motionless with empty gas tanks.

Oh, and while your at it, buy a copy of On The Beach by Neville Shute.  It's one of the best books I've ever read, about nuclear war breaking out due to a world oil crisis.  It was written in the 1950's, set in the 1980's and is so close to home it gives me goosebumps every time I think about it. (Don't buy it from Amazon, just read the reviews then order it from your local bookshop!)
